Tromboniste, chanteuse, compositrice et parolière, Siya Makuzeni s’exprime avec une verve et une énergie contagieuses. Née dans la province de l’Eastern Cape d’une mère cheffe de choeur et d’un père collectionneur de vinyls, elle étudie au lycée musical Stirling et se forme dans les big bands scolaires où elle truste les récompenses. Siya Makuzeni marie les harmonies vocales de sa région à des influences variées et contemporaines, notamment les nombreux artistes avec lesquelles elle s’est produite (Carlo Mombelli, Zim Ngqawana, Sibongile Khumalo...). Sa versatilité en a fait une figure incontournable de la scène musicale sud-africaine, comme accompagnatrice ou à la tête de ses propres groupes, dont IppyFuze, entre hip hop, rock et électronique. On la trouve aussi dans les aventures transdisciplinaires de l'artiste William Kentridge aux côtés de la chorégraphe Dada Masilo.
Siya Makuzeni fait de sa voix une chorale à l’aide de samples, sur laquelle elle improvise. Au trombone elle s’exprime avec puissance et lyrisme. Son premier album, sorti en 2016, a été unanimement salué et a suivi son prix du Standard Bank Jazz Artist de l’année en 2016.
Trombone player, singer, composer and lyricist, Siya Makuzeni expresses herself with passion and contagious energy. Born in the Eastern Cape Province from a choir leader mother and a vynil collector father, she studied in the Stirling High School, famous for its music department, where she trained herself in the school provicial big bands and received numerous awards. Siya Makuzeni mixes the traditional vocal harmonies of her region with more varied and contemporary influences, amongst which the numerous artists with whom she shared a stage (Carlo Mombelli, Zim Ngqawana, Sibongile Khumalo...). Her versatility has made her unavoidable on the South African music scene, both as a session musician and as a leader of her own projects, such as IppyFuze, between hip hop, rock and electronica. She can also be found in the transdisciplinary art forms of William Kentridge, along side choreographer Dada Masilo.
Siya Makuzeni multiplies her voice with sampler and improvises on this choir. On trombone she plays with a power and lyricism. Her first album, published in 2016, was unanimously appreciated and followed her nomination as Standard Bank Jazz Artist of the Year.
